Devils Lake Bus Slides Off Road; Residents Call for Action

Rain and soft roads caused a school bus to go into the ditch Tuesday morning near Devils Lake. It's one more reason many residents say something needs to be done in the Lake Region.

No one was hurt in the incident.

The Devils Lake School Board told its drivers never to drive on a road with water covering it, but the road the bus was on Tuesday was in a construction zone and was simply soft from the water in, on, and around it.

Parents are having to meet buses at alternative pick-up points to get their kids to school.

Several roads are washed out, creating extra costs for the district as well.

Buses are having to leave earlier in the morning, travel more miles, and return later at night.

But officials say it's all for safety.

"We try to stay as safe as we can, but the roads out there, in some places, when you get in the right situation, something could happen," transportation director for Devils Lake Public Schools Tom Dion said.
