Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) - Minnesota has its first case of human West Nile. The man is from Murray County, and he is recovering.

State health officials say we're approaching the high-risk season for West Nile. They say the risk West Nile is greatest in Western and Central Minnesota.

The North Dakota Department of Health says a woman in her 30s from Grant County is the first human to have the virus in North Dakota. The woman was not hospitalized. The state health department says more human cases are coming.

Alicia Lepp - North Dakota Health Dept: "Once the first one is discovered, we do tend to see cases come afterwards. We are seeing an increase in our culex tarsalis mosquito count; that's the mosquito that transmits West Nile Virus, and usually when we start to see an increase in that mosquito, we start to see cases come after that."

Lepp says to make sure and wear mosquito repellent with DEET, wear long sleeves and pants when weather permits and remove any standing water, including bird baths, from your lawn.
