FARGO – Firefighters extinguished a fire in an apartment building on Eighth Street South here early Saturday morning.
The uniquely shaped apartment building was challenging for first responders, who had trouble locating the fire, according to a news release.
The Fargo Fire Department was initially dispatched to 807 2nd Ave. S. in Fargo at 5:15 a.m. Saturday. Fire alarms were set off in the building and an individual called 911 to report smoke.
The fire crews did not see any signs of smoke or fire at the Second Avenue address, but found smoke on the third floor of a different section of the building listed at 119 8th St. S.
Fire crews put out a fire located in the living room of apartment No. 19 on the third floor. The unit’s occupant was not home at the time, but two cats died in the fire.
Fire damage is estimated at $40,000, according to the release. There was significant fire damage to apartment 19 and moderate fire, water and smoke damage to the apartment directly below. Two other apartments sustained water damage.
The fire department is investigating the cause of the fire and the release lists unattended burning candles as a possible cause.
