Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) - This heat and humidity have all of us cranking up the air conditioning and putting some extra pressure on our local power companies.

Xcel energy says usage in the metro is not close to a record, but the power company says we can all conserve energy by raising our thermostat just a few degrees. Open windows at night, if the humidity is low and use a microwave instead of an oven.

Xcel says it's investing a billion dollars into making improvements to the system, from upgraded substations to using smart grid technology that gets power up and running to customers quicker during an outage.

Mark Nesbit, Xcel Energy: “The reliability has become such a big issue and the type of businesses we have here with manufacturing and high tech and we heard clearly people value that reliability.”

Some of the big Xcel users like the City of Fargo and Sanford use generators during peak demand as part of a program to reduce energy use.
