Fargo, ND (WDAY TV)-- Before you can dive in to a backyard pool project. There are a few things you need to know.

Depending on where you live, many cities require special permits for residential pool construction.

Moorhead is one, while Fargo is not.

There are also rules about securing your pool.

Fargo requires all pools to be fenced in, while Moorhead requires a fence, or at least a hard cover so people can't fall in.

Moorhead and Detroit Lakes also have impervious cover limits or zoning rules. Restricting the amount of yard space your pool can cover.

Steve Olson- Olson Pools & Spas Owner: "We like to get with the homeowners early. Winter is a good time to do it, even though it's probably not time to be thinking about a pool. We get with the homeowners because then you can get your permits, you can get your plans all drawn up, so that when we get here, everybody is on the same page."

Most insurance companies only require extra insurance if you have a diving board.
