Fargo, ND (WDAY TV)-- We told you about the bumper crop of strawberries earlier in the show. But did you know the're just one of many edible SPF's or rather foods helping to aid the body against UV rays.

Linda Bartholomay, with Sanford's Diabetes Center says a mix of certain fruits and vegetables in your diet can protect you from skin cancer.

It's all due to the chemicals within them.

While you should still lather on the sunscreen, natural protectants include leafy greens, spices like paprika, green tea, soy products and brightly colored foods.

Linda Bartholomay - Sanford Diabetes Center: "Tomatoes are very high in a substance called Lycopene which is a chemical that helps prevent inflammation but it also is what we call an antioxidant so it protects from free radicals bouncing around in our skin."

To get the most out of tomatoes, Bartholomay suggests cooking them.

Your skin will reap the benefits up to 42 days later.
