Grand Forks, ND (WDAY TV)-- A hot, humid day in the northern valley couldn't keep a large crowd from the largest tractor pull competition in Grand Forks.
The Joe Perkerewicz Memorial Tractor Pull brought some old, and new faces, to the sport.
Tyler Hillestad is no stranger to competing in tractor pulls.
Tyler Hillestad- Competes in Tractor Pulls: There's 13 and I've gone to all of them.
At 17, Hillestad is the youngest competitor today.
Tyler: I get to talk about tractors with the old guys so it's pretty fun.
He does more than talk. Tyler gets to work unloading his tractor, attaching chains, and filling up the gas tank.
Tyler: It's something to do on the weekend other than just sit inside. It's hot out but that's part of it.
While Tyler's a seasoned vet around here, it's a different story for Roberta Stephenson.
Roberta Stephenson- First Time at Tractor Pull: This is my first tractor pull. It's a totally new experience for me.
Roberta's fiance Scott Pearson helped organize the event...and he's helping Roberta understand it.
Roberta: They're explaining the rules which is a good thing because I have no clue what they're doing.
The Joe Perkerewicz Memorial Tractor Pull is named in honor of one of its founders.
Scott Pearson- Tractor Pull Organizer: Joe was a really fine man.
Joe's son Dave says his dad worked hard to create interest in the sport.
Dave Perkerewicz- Tractor Pull Organizer: We grew up with it so we did it all the time. Traveled around and went to all the local tractor pulls.
Dave: I brought my M International today.
This is Dave's tractor from 1941. It was passed down to him from his dad Joe and he still uses it to compete.
Dave: It kind of stuck with me and I keep on doing them.
Scott shares a similar ove for old farm equipment.
Scott: When I see an old tractor when I put my hands on it or sit on it I feel sort of a tangible link to the technology and the people of the past. I think it's worth remembering and we just have a good time.
The tractor pull took place in the Home of Economy parking lot, which helps sponsor the event each year.
