Barnesville, MN (WDAY TV)-- The Clay County fair is celebrating a major milestone this weekend, it's now in its 100th year.

It is dealing with some competition, what organizers call the "other," bigger fair is simultaneously happening right down the road.

100 fairs later, that hasn't changed.

Alissa Nibbe- Barnesville Resident: "I've been coming to the fair my whole life."

Janice Alm- Horse Show Announcer: "I've been at the fair for a long long time."

This year, Clay County is celebrating its 100th fair.

And it's the people here that have kept the Barnesville bash going all these years.

People like Janice Alm and her family.

She has been the horse show announcer for more than 30 years, and five of her grandkids compete.

Alm: "We have very nice fairgrounds, which I'm proud of, and we've got a lot of exhibitors especially in the horse area, it's really grown over the years."

This year, the Clay County fair fell on the same weekend as the Red River Valley Fair just 25 miles down the road. But fair organizers say it hasn't pulled people away.

For years, they have tried to schedule around the "other" fair, but this time they picked a date and stuck with it.

Nibbe: "It's obviously bigger at the Red River Valley Fair. But it's cool when you know people and you know their exhibits. You know, 'oh I know that pig! I know the owner of that pig!'"

And it's that hometown vibe that keeps people coming back.

The fair continues through Sunday.
