Pelican Rapids, MN (WDAY TV)-- Pelican Rapids is keeping a long-living tradition alive.
The streets were lined tonight with people cheering on their turkeys.
If you're thinking this sounds silly, you're dead on. But it's much harder than it looks.
There's not one way - there's many strategies to get the turkey on the fast track.
Between, the names, the number of teams and these outfits. I'd say it might be pure luck.
"not turkey races, not since I was little."
To see these gobblers cross the finish line.
"the whistle and the garbage bag kind of worked.
16 teams, dressed the part, pre-gamed, some even practiced,
"I kind of watch other people, see what they did and what worked."
to try to ruffle these guys' feather and force them down the track.
But this guy,
"bang bang bang bang."
says he knew from the start.
That his turkey team would finish first.
His dad, a proud impromptu coach.
"I remember doing it when I was their age, so. Yeah, it's been awhile since I know we had 'em in town so. It's kind of fun to be a part of so.
Says it's the days like this -
"It's fun to get back into it. A lot of people get excited to do it. And of course the kids love doing it too, so."
He likes to look back on, remembering turkey tradition like this. All ages were out there. And this was the first time the town brought back the turkey tradition, since they last raced back in 2004.
