A Grafton man has been charged with attempted murder after authorities say he repeatedly struck his wife in the head with a metal hammer.

Frank Aasand, 61, was charged after authorities say he struck his wife, Victoria, first while she was sleeping and unable to defend herself. Aasand called 911, but then continued to hit his wife with the hammer, yelling obscenities during the course of the assault, authorities said.

Victoria was transported to Unity Medical Center in Grafton, and then transferred to Altru in Grand Forks for treatment for what the Walsh County State's Attorney calls a "severe" injury "requiring hospitalization and emergency surgery," according to a criminal complaint.

Aasand was arrested at the home without incident. He's being held at the Walsh County Law Enforcement Center without bail. Aasand will likely have a bail hearing once he has retained an attorney.

Attempted murder carries a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison and/or a $10,000 fine.

In June of 2007, Aasand plead guilty and was found guilty of DUI.

UPDATE: Monday evening

According to an Altru supervising nurse, Victoria Aasand was listed in satisfactory condition at that hospital as of Monday night.
