Health professionals learn about tobacco use from those with mental illnesses, addiction

Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) - People with severe mental illnesses die on average 25 years earlier than the general public.

The number one cause of death in that population is heart disease caused by tobacco use.

Today, local mental health professionals went through training to better understand tobacco use among those with mental illnesses or addictions.

Dr. Jill Williams from Robert Wood Johnson Medical School says it is an issue that is often ignored.
