West Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) - Conditions right now are perfect for the species of mosquito that spreads West Nile virus.

Cass County Vector Control began testing trapped mosquitos for the virus today. Standing water and high temperatures consistently in the 80s provide ideal conditions for West Nile to spread.

This is earlier than usual for testing, which typically starts at the end of July.

Ben Prather, Vector Control: "They started seeing some human cases, one at least in South Dakota. There are a few others throughout the country. We're just trying to be ahead of the curve and make sure that we have as much information as we can to do the correct things and be as proactive as possible."
