West Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) - Another reason people come to fairs: The food. And there is plenty of food here.
There are dozens of options, from basic to bizarre. Cheese curds, cotton candy, corn dogs. But also Chocolate chip cookies with bacon: The "Meat Eater." A brat wrapped in bacon, wrapped in cheese and deep dried. Even Macaroni and cheese, on a stick.
For some people the taste of the fair food is the most important parts, but for health inspectors, it's the safety of it.
Timothy Haak with the North Dakota Department of Health has been busy all morning, checking each of the 29 food vendors. Hakk is inspecting the cleanliness of each booth
Timothy Haak, ND Department of Health: “If the employees are keeping clean, you know the uniforms are kept clean and washing their hands is a big deal out here.”
Making sure the food is at the proper temperature.
Haak: “Keeping hot foods hot and cold foods cold.”
And checking each of the vendors has a business license.
Haak: “Go around make sure some of the out of state ones that haven't already applied for one with us that I obtain those licenses.”
Haak has been inspecting this fair for years and he says the good news, no major problems have been reported.
Haak: “Some of these I have inspected 15 years ago and they are pretty much the same thing and they know what they are supposed to do out here.”
Haak will continue to work throughout the week so you can enjoy your favorite fair treats with no worries.
