Fergus Falls, MN (WDAY TV)-- Tonight, eight different people have to find another place to stay after losing nearly everything. 5-families lost their homes in the fire. And say after a fire so big, they're lucky to still be alive.

Dianne Brekke- Lost Apartment in Fire: "Everything is gone"

Imagine leaving home for the weekend, and coming back to find nothing left.

Brekke: "About 8:15 this morning my brother called me and told me the building had burned"

Dianne Brekke had been vacationing at the lake when the apartment she's lived in for 33 years went up in flames.

Brekke: "They would have had to restrain me if I would've been here. So it's probably a good thing I wasnt here."

But she came right home to find this, ashes and water filled remains now the only things marking some of her most precious memories.

Brekke: "You can tell it's just gone. In the back you can see it's just a hole in my apartment."

I spoke with a woman who lives in one of the front apartments that got some of the worst damage. She would not go on camera but tells me she made it out safely with her 7 year old daughter.

Brekke: "I'm just glad everyone got out. That's all I can say. I've lived here the longest but everyone else has just kind of come and go."

The view from the street now showing how fast fire can tear apart a building. Leaving the people watching their homes crumble, to pick up the charred pieces.

Brekke: "I'll get through it somehow"

Brekke says she does have renter's insurance. Which should cover most of the damage.
