Fargo, ND (WDAY TV)-- A change in North Dakota state law is forcing Fargo to eliminate a city ordinance.
The current law states that it is illegal to have a dangerous weapon or firearm in public unless it is fully encased or enclosed in the trunk of a vehicle.
Starting August first, this law will be no more. It is still required under North Dakota law that a person carrying a loaded firearm have a valid concealed weapons license.
Under the new law, licensed gun owners in Fargo will be permitted to carry a concealed weapon with them in public. Fargo police don't support the change.
LT. Joel Vettel- Fargo Police Department: "Certainly our position on this one was not one that favored the passage of this type of law but we certainly understand how they got to this point and we will deal with the situations as they arrive."
Fargo is also stripping its ordinances of references to pepper spray and stun guns as "dangerous weapons."
