BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — The commander of the North Dakota National Guard says the impact of furloughs on roughly two-thirds of the state's full-time National Guard staff is unknown.

Maj. Gen. David Sprynczynatyk tells the Bismarck Tribune that the furloughs caused by automatic budget cuts will begin Monday. Thousands of full-time National Guard staff across the nation will be required to work one less day a week through the end of September.

The military furloughs originally were to apply only to civilian personnel, but the Defense Department has added technicians to the list of those to be put on furloughs.

Sprynczynatyk says the North Dakota National Guard has 600 technicians that will be subject to the furlough law.

He says a major concern is the potential effect on the Guard's readiness.
