Fargo, ND (WDAY TV)-- Fargo Police took on a different role to bring a man poised to jump from an I-94 overpass to safety.

The man climbed on top of the walkway fence on the 25th Street overpass and was threatening to kill himself.

A passerby saw him around midnight and called police.

Traffic was blocked on eastbound I-94 and 25th street for about an hour as officers talked the man down.

LT. Joel Vettel- Fargo Police Department: "He was expressing the fact that he wanted to harm himself, that he wanted to kill himself, that he was not happy with the way things were happening in his life at that moment. So, really it came down to them trying to convince him that life was still worth living."

The man eventually chose to come down and was taken to a hospital for an evaluation.
