Detroit Lakes, MN (WDAY TV) - Traffic to the lakes was thick this afternoon.

The mayor of Detroit Lakes estimates that his city triples in population during the summer and holidays like the fourth.

Each Fourth of July, Justin and Salone Scallon ditch Fargo for a trip to their cabin on Big Detroit, and why not? The Detroit Lakes area is a summer hot spot for a reason.

Justin Scallon, Fargo Resident: "We come out here because it's such a fun place to be. The big public beach, the open water, water-skiing, tubing."

It's a city of about 8,500 people but not on Independence Day weekend.

Mayor Matt Brenk, Detroit Lakes: "We are probably three times that big because the suburban area around Detroit Lakes includes a lot of the lakes where people come down and go to their cabins."

While the unusual amount of traffic can be frustrating for locals, it does wonders for the economy. Local restaurants and bars do big business on the Fourth of July weekend.

Brenk: "Our bars and restaurants will be full. Our hotels and motels are full."

Knowing that thousands of tourists are coming in, the community tries to show them a good time. They organize parades, and strive for bigger and better fireworks displays. But for some, it's just the simple joys that a lake brings.

Scallon: "Just love being on the water and the kids love it."

That keeps them coming back.
