Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) - With summer in full swing, those do it yourself projects are likely calling. Before you dig out the tool box you might just need your smartphone because there's an app for that.

OK, your smartphone isn't going to take the place of all of this but there are some handy and easy-to-use tool apps that could come in handy in a pinch and help make "doing it yourself" a little easier.

First we checked out the Magnetic stud finder app for Androids. The free app has a customized metal detector with a bubble level, both incredibly handy if you're trying to hang a heavy picture or shelf and you need to hit stud and keep it level. This app finds both metal and wood studs by showing the nails and screws in the studs.

For the iPhone, there's the free iHandy Level. It helps make sure your frames, corners and angles are straight. It's one of the five tools of iHandy Carpenter toolkit.

You can get the super ruler on your Android phone. It has several functions including a ruler, diagonal ruler, protractor and distance measurement, plus level measurement, vertical measurement and cross vertical measurement. There's similar ruler apps for the i-phone

If you find yourself in a fix in the dark, you'll want a flashlight app. For Androids we found the highly rated and free Brightest Flashlight App. It turns on all of the available lights on your device, creating a bright spotlight.

Again, all of these apps are free.
