DICKINSON, N.D. (AP) — Officials say some workers in Dickinson severed a saltwater pipeline, causing the liquid to spill into a ditch.

Stark County Road Superintendent Al Heiser tells the Dickinson Press (http://bit.ly/1cS3Hvn ) that the line was ruptured Tuesday night along Highway 10, about 3 miles west of Dickinson.

Heiser and Dickinson Rural Fire Department Chief Andy Paulson were on the scene shortly after it was reported by a passerby.

Paulson says the cause of the spill is under investigation. He says it doesn't appear that the spill would cause any safety problems.

Saltwater is a byproduct of oil production.
