Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) - Former Arizona Congresswoman Gabby Giffords and her husband Mark Kelly are pushing for expanded background checks for gun owners.

They stopped at Atomic Coffee in Fargo today on their "Rights and Responsibilities" tour.

Giffords was seriously injured when she was shot in the head at a January 2011 campaign rally in Tuscon. She spoke briefly this afternoon in a prepared statement.

In April, the U.S. Senate rejected a Universal Background Check bill 54 to 46. Both Senators Heidi Heitkamp and John Hoeven were among the no votes.

Mark Kelly, Giffords’ Husband: "We looked at the recent universal background check bill and how the vote turned out in the Senate. We found it important to go to certain states and just learn more about how members' constituents feel about this issue."
