Fargo, ND (WDAY TV)-- If you're heading out of town for the holiday weekend, chances are you'll run into heavy traffic.
Now, Mn DOT has plans to help you through those sticky spots with a new app.
Traffic is already starting to pick up and we haven't even reached the fourth of July yet.
And soon, finding your way to the cabin could become smoother.
Summer is here, the snow is gone and once the weekend hits,
Beth Maher-Driver: "We travel out to the lake almost every weekend."
The roads are packed.
Maher: "There's been a lot of traffic on highway ten just with all the road construction."
Traveling has almost become like a guessing game.
Dell Makovsky-Driver: "The closer you get to the cities, it seems like it gets worse."
With slow downs and back ups, there has to be another way. Now there is.
Jerimiah Moerke- MN DOT: "The goal is to make it as stream lined as possible."
MN DOT is developing an app - designed to find all the spots you simply want to get around.
Moerke: "You can get speeds. Like how fast traffic is flowing on most roads around the state."
Construction zones, road conditions and crashes will all be visible through the new system, similar to their 511 information site now.
Dell doesn't quite have a smart phone yet,
Makovsky: "I got the old flip flop one yet."
But thinks it's a great idea.
Makovsky: "Help me plan my route, really."
Maher: "I think it would be safer."
Especially for holiday weekends as busy as this.
Maher: "When I have a car full of kids it's probably safer to know different routes to take with less traffic."
The app isn't quite finished yet. It rolls out later this month.
Until then you check out your route at 511MN dot org.
