Fargo, ND (WDAY TV)-- Today could be known in the college sporting world
as Realignment Monday. 42 schools officially switched conferences; including three involving NDSU's conference, the Summit League; with
UMKC and league power Oakland departing, but movement is nothing new to this conference.
Saul Phillips- NDSU 7th Year Heach Coach: This league has historically been a transient, they're trying to put their anchor done and so it doesn't stay that way.
For the 2nd straight year; the Summit League map is changing; dropping schools Kansas City and Oakland; two of the longer road trips for the Bison and replaced them with Denver; a school that is on the rise.
Gene Taylor- NDSU Athletic Director: I think Denver brings a really good program; and when I talked to their athletic director she made a comment; we knew; we sought you guys out and their are strengths that you have as a league that we wanted to be a part of it.
Saul: Travel is a major player in a league like ours because of where
we're located; you take a map of all the D-1's in America and we are
an outlier like of schools in this league are outliers; been a good
home for us; its an underrated league.
Izzo question: Gene everyone will know with men's basketball with
Oakland and Oral Roberts now they're gone is the league as good as it
was when you got in in 2007?
Taylor: certainly those are good programs; and our fans would look at
the Oral Roberts game and the Oakland game now Denver comes in Denver
is going to bring a level of experience; SDSU has been really good;
yes we lost some teams our fans identified with as a rivalry
standpoint and they've made the NCAA Tournament but I think we enough
strength and people spending money in basketball to get to where SDSU
is where Oakland was and where we are that I think we are going to be
Saul: I know this we are a very good fit for the teams in our league
right now and we'll try to go out and beat the teams in our league
it's that simple.
Since 2006; 12 schools have either left or joined the Summit League.
