MINOT, N.D. (AP) — Zoo officials in Minot say a 460-pound male lion is doing well after receiving a root canal.

Roosevelt Park Zoo Director David Merritt tells the Minot Daily News (http://bit.ly/15RI3Ub ) that Kiota the lion fractured one of its prominent canine teeth and underwent dental surgery on Monday.

Merritt says the dental work on the big cat was a first at the zoo.

Officials say it took about eight people to heft the lion onto an operating table that was loaned to the zoo by a local hospital. The root canal only took about an hour.

Merritt called it a "roaring success."
