Valley City, ND (WDAY TV) -- Thousands of pieces of criminal evidence was ruined at the Valley City Police Department thanks to last weeks rain storm.

Nearly 8 feet of water filled the basement after about 7 inches of rain fell in about 4 hours. Police officials have started to dig through the evidence to see what's salvageable. Evidence includes everything from cell phones, drug paraphernalia, to important documents.

Recovering it could take months.

Chief Fred Thompsson says with the Valley City Police says, "detailed oriented, they're going to have to try to find some pieces of information on an evidence bag and go back and pull the case out and review the case and then try to match the evidence they they have in front of them with the written report and regenerate an evidence packaging."

It's not yet known what effect if any this will have on certain cases.
