West Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) - It's one of the most popular events in West Fargo. Cruise Night. Tonight is the first of four.
Hundreds of classic cars and motorcycles line the streets of Sheyenne Street, from Main to 7th Avenue. From Mustangs, to vans, to trucks, they are immaculate.
Cruise night is held every third Thursday of the month through September. In conjunction with Cruise Night, a West Fargo business gave a very special gift.
STH Auto donated a car to one deserving couple. For that family, it's much more than a new vehicle, it's peace of mind.
As Wayne and Sandy Schumacher climbed into their new car, all they could think about was how it would change their lives.
Sandy Schumacher, Car Giveaway Winner: "This is so exciting!"
58-year-old Wayne suffers from kidney failure.
He has dialysis three days a week and it's crucial that he makes his appointments. But the Schumachers' 1997 Chevy Astro Van wasn't cutting it.
Wayne Schumacher, Car Giveaway Winner: "It has about a quarter of a million miles on it and all these problems."
But they couldn't afford a new vehicle. They could barely afford the many repairs to their van.
When their daughter heard that STH Auto was giving away a car, she sent in her nomination for them to win a 2001 Ford Taurus.
Sandy Schumacher: "It will be nice just to drive something and not be scared it's going to break down."
STH owner Scott Adams bought the car from a customer. His intention was to fix it up and give it away to someone who really needed it.
Scott Adams, STH Owner: "I just wanted to do something to give back to the community that would use my skills as a mechanic."
The car needed some work, so STH put in a new fuel pump and battery, while Dakota Bumper fixed up the bumpers and paint job.
And for the Schumacher's, the good news keeps coming. Wayne recently learned he may have a chance at a kidney transplant.
Sandy Schumacher: "We are just so excited and grateful."
The two other finalists for the car giveaway were awarded $250 gift certificates for auto repairs.
