Moorhead, MN (WDAY TV) - Police are investigating an apparent homicide investigation in Moorhead where friends of the victim say they're shocked and shaken.

Authorities found the body of a man friends say is Henry Volochenko in his home Wednesday night and people close to him call their old friend kind hearted and extremely generous.

Police are still on scene here at 1209 Main Avenue. They first arrived for a medical assist last night at 9:30.

This is where friends tell us police discovered the body of Henry Volochenko, a man in his 80s or 90s who they like to call "Hank".

Leon Francis, Friend of Homicide Victim: "It kind of smacks you in the face because it doesn't happen here."

Leon Francis woke up this morning to shocking, and devastating news all coming out of this home on Main Avenue, where his friend, Henry Volochenko or Hank was murdered.

Francis: "He's an awesome guy, just salt of the earth, shirt of his back."

Leon has been helping out around Hank's house for several years and says his old friend had become a grandfather figure to him and his children.

Francis: "He's a veteran of I think three wars, I mean, I used to joke with him ‘Hank, you're like 100 years old.’”

Leon says Hank had a lot of clutter and was very generous with his belongings, often giving things to anyone who needed help. But he says more recently, Hank told him about several break-ins and had Leon install new locks on his doors so Leon says he thinks this murder, came from what he calls a "burglary gone bad"

Francis: "This was so unnecessary because with Hank, if you needed something, he would give it to you."

Dept. Chief Shannon Monroe, Moorhead Police: "We have nothing that says that this is anything more than an act where it's probably people that know each other. We don't know that for sure even at this point."

And as police try to track down whoever is involved. Leon hopes Moorhead will remember the man whose kind generosity may have cost him his life.

Francis: "It's senseless, absolutely senseless. I haven't even told my kids yet. They will be, they will be heartbroken."

Police have not confirmed the victim's name or released any information about possible suspects and are asking anyone with more information to contact them.
