Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) - Four months after Montana State dropped off NDSU's football schedule for 2013, it is now officially done. And while the opponent won't get the fan base talking, the reason how it came about certainly will.
The Bison will host Division II School Ferris State at the Fargodome on September 7th replacing Montana State.
Now for months Gene Taylor has said he would not schedule a Division II opponent because those schools don't count towards your win total in the eyes of the FCS Playoff Committee but that's not the case anymore.
Gene Taylor, NDSU Athletic Director: “The FCS Championship Committee has been working on a new system going to be called the Simple Rating System and what this does is takes into account victories over FCS, FBS and Division II opponents so basically it's a strength of schedule being one tool in the selection process and that's brand new as of last week.”
The full details on the new simple ratings system have not been released yet but Taylor says that will come shortly.
So NDSU will play 11 games this year. They will not add a 12th game. The Ferris State game serves as the home opener after the trip to Kansas State. Delaware State follows on September 21st, followed by home games with Northern Iowa, Missouri.
