Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) - After hours of pomp and ceremony, a new Bishop is in place for the Fargo Diocese, the ordination taking place late this afternoon at St. Mary's Cathedral.
Bishop John Folda now takes over the Diocese.
So many people here for the Ordination that Fargo Police shutdown Broadway. This as the Bishop takes over a 72,000 member Diocese.
On one of summer's finest, warmest days, hundreds of priests from the state and region came across Broadway to St.Mary's Cathedral for the historic day.
Arch-Bishop Samuel Aquila, now in Denver came, as did Bishops and Archbishops from around Midwest. All for this man, John Folda, who today went from a Nebraska priest, to a North Dakota Bishop. Minutes before he walked the steps of the Cathedral, we talked with him.
Bishop John Folda, Fargo Diocese: “I'm very happy, very happy. Very at peace, very at peace. God is good.”
Inside, a thousand people celebrated. Music, fanfare. A Catholic audience worldwide watching, welcoming the eightth Bishop for the Diocese.
After the two hour ceremony, John Fold came out of St. Marys a Bishop. He greeted the hundreds of church leaders and priests who came to mark the historic day. Now, the challenges of leading a diocese lay ahead.

Bishop Folda now in charge of 132 parishes in the Diocese, served by 84 priests.
