Fargo, ND (WDAY TV)-- A new study shows that social media may be the key to solving the shortage of organ donors.

More than 100 thousand people in the U.S. took advantage of a Facebook change last year to allow certain members to identify themselves as organ donors.

Some 33,000 signed up with their state registries to be donors for the first time.

13,000 in the first day !

Nick Hillman- Director of Transplant Services, Sanford: "It gives people the voice to be able to put it on social media that they need an organ donor, or that they want to be an advocate for organ donors, so it's a way people can share their testimony with the world essentially and promoting organ donation and transplantation."

There are currently about 118 thousand people on the waiting list to receive a transplant.
