Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) - As Immigration Reform Legislation comes to the forefront, Senator Heidi Heitkamp wants to make sure our state is well-represented in the debate.

She met with local business leaders to see how the new bill would impact them and their businesses. One of the biggest concerns is being able to stay competitive with other countries in terms of the workforce.

Right now several high quality employees are having to leave once their work visa runs out. Heitkamp says it's a problem because the United States loses that talent and another country will gain.

Heidi Heitkamp, (D) North Dakota: “The question is the year to year visa system does not create certainty for American businesses and once again what we are talking about is this system that would create certainty that they need to know that that worker that's here today won’t be gone tomorrow.”

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid has declared the Fourth of July Holiday as the deadline for his chamber to complete work on the bill.
