Detroit Lakes, MN (WDAY TV) -- Flowering rush test treatments will expand in Detroit Lakes this year after past success.

Last year, treatments with a chemical called Diquat eliminated 95% of the above water plant, along with 85% of the buds and below-water growth in the tested areas.

Detroit Lake has struggled with flowering rush since the 1980s.

Dr. John Madsen with Mississippi State University says, "it's time for one victory dance, don't get carried away it's not the end of the story but it looks like we have found a way to treat that submersed plant and have some success."

This year they plan to expand the diquat testing to 250 acres of lakes.
