Housing assistance requests in the Red River Valley have skyrocketed

Fargo, ND (WDAY TV)-- The housing market in the area may be booming, but all the activity doesn't help those in need of housing assistance.

Lakes and Prairie's Community Action saw a nearly 70% spike in housing assistance requests in 2012.

Vashawn Carter is struggling to find a place to call home.

She and her five children have been staying at Churches United in Moorhead for more than two months, she says she lost her housing in January.

Vashawn Carter- Searching for a Home: "For the size family that I have it's hard to find a four-bedroom that's available, landlords that are willing to work with my rental history."

She is not the only one.

Housing assistance requests in the Red River Valley have skyrocketed.

At Lakes and Prairie's Community Action, nearly 70-percent more households requested help from 2011 to 2012.

Colleen Murray- Lakes and Prairies Community Action: "We're just seeing more and more needs here in our community and having to stretch our resources as far as we can."

In the past two years, the apartment vacancy rate has dropped from 5% to 2%. And many of the new buildings going up have higher price-points.

Murray: "The maximum amount of rent that we can pay for a one-bedroom unit is $495 a month. The average going rate for a one-bedroom apartment is about $700 a month."

For Carter, she just wants a place for her family to call home...

Carter: "As long as I have a roof over my kids' head, they're more manageable, they're not as frustrated and stressed out, they do better in school."

And while that dream is getting closer, so far it remains out of reach.

Churches United says they are seeing the effects.

Some larger families stay for up to 9 months before they find housing.
