Electronic cigarettes are beginning to look less like a fad

Fargo, ND (WDAY TV)-- Electronic cigarettes are beginning to look less like a fad, and more like the wave of the future.

Fargo, ND (WDAY TV)-- Electronic cigarettes are beginning to look less like a fad, and more like the wave of the future.

The parent company of Marlboro just announced it'll make an "e-cigarette."

That means all major tobacco companies will now produce a product that competes with their money maker.

E-cigarette sales doubled in the last year. It has people thinking the cigarette disposal might be disappearing in the future.

You see Aaron Godard on a smoke break -- and it looks like he's puffing on something from the future.

Actually they call it "vaping."

He's part of a large group giving up cigarettes for the electronic version,

and numbers show people aren't going back.

Aaron isn't

"I see it growing."

E-cigs have been inside Tobacco City for about 8 years.

General Manager Tony Sundby say just recently have people come in and ask for brands by name. And just recently the parent company to Marlboro announced it's getting into the game, making it the last cigarette giant to jump in.

Tony Sundby- GM Tobacco City: "They see the same numbers you do, you can research that and see a growth pattern so I'm sure they're taking advantage of that."

Remember this guy. You don't see him anymore. Tobacco companies have restrictions on advertising.

As of now, e-cigarettes don't. The companies are pushing a young modern look, with slogans like freedom to smoke where you want, arguing that they're cheaper than cigarettes and calling it a healthy alternative.

"There are so many unknowns."

Sanford's Vicki Haberman says it's too early to know what the e-cigs are.

What they're not, is FDA approved.

Tests have found harmful chemicals inside, nothing comparable to cigarettes but Vicki says cancer causing.

Vicki Haberman- Sanford Respiratory Therapy: "You're basically setting yourself up to be a guinea pig for cigarette companies that are marketing these devices."

As to why tobacco companies would produce a product that competes with cigarettes, the anology is they don't want to be blockbuster video and watch netflix fly by.
