Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) - Freddy Coleman always played like a leader during his time with NDSU and those traits he will now take to the Bison bench.

The school announced today that he has been hired as an assistant coach for Saul Phillips, replacing Jason Kemp who left to take a job at Akron.

Coleman has spent the last two years on the bench with Rich Glas at Concordia. Coleman played three years at NDSU, averaging eight points in his senior year and says the seeds of coaching were planted early.

Freddy Coleman, New NDSU Assistant Coach: “It kind of collected during it. When I sat out my junior year with my Achilles injury, kind of got me into coaching. Didn't redshirt freshmen so kind of got to see them coaching them, some things that coaches didn't catch got to spend more with the staff. Richman and Saul pulled me aside and said ‘You can be really good at this someday’ and something that excited me and got me what I'm doing now.”

Coleman will handle all aspects on the bench, with recruiting also being a major focus.
