Moorhead, MN (WDAY TV) - Backers of Congress's immigration bill are coming together in Moorhead to push for change.
F-M leaders from area faith based groups, non-profits and labor unions spoke today at the Hjemkomst Center in favor of the bill. They say 11 million aspiring Americans will have a better path to citizenship under the proposed legislation.
Other changes, the bill would require all employers to check legal status of their workers, tighten security at the U.S. Mexico border and create new or expand visa programs.
Pastor Peter Schmidt, Faith Lutheran Church/West Fargo: “I'm thrilled that our national leaders are working on a way to reform a system that's terribly broken and to make it more just and more fair. We're all going to win with this one.”
The U.S. Senate today defeated a change to border security and new census numbers released today show that minorities, including many immigrants, are the driving factor in Minnesota's growing population, up six percent from 2010 to 2012.
