Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) - Turns out the harsh winter and late spring is taking its toll on some area bait and tackle shops.
The Lake Place in Lake Park is a hot spot for anglers to grab gas, snacks and fresh bait before heading out to the lakes. The owners say last year business was a swimming success, but this year it’s been off to a slower start. They estimate business is about three weeks behind schedule due to the weather and it’s even making fresh bait harder to catch.
With trappers having to work extra hours to find fresh bait - the price is going up in value.
Raina Askin, The Lake Place: "The Red Tails, which are what the walleye fisherman want, still really haven't come in. They're waiting and hoping that they'll come in that is also very weather dependent. The temperatures need to warm up and the river water levels need to go down in order to trap them."
Askin says some of the smaller ponds froze out where trappers get their bait.
