Semi jackknife leaves hundreds of gallons of diesel along I-94

Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) - This morning, a semi driver lost control on I-94 and jack-knifed as he over corrected.

That's when the trailer swung around, slashing a hole in its fuel tank.

The semi drove up this ramp and into the Moorhead rest stop after the accident. And let me tell you, it reeks of diesel and it's all over the pavement. And despite only spilling ten gallons, this is a very dangerous and time consuming clean up.

It happened around 10 o'clock this morning when the 7 Star Express truck hit a curb along the freeway and lost control.

The 150 gallon fuel take burst, spilling diesel along I-94, the ramp and a good portion in the parking lot of the Moorhead rest stop.

We spoke with Canadian truckers off camera, who tell us they haul potatoes and are on their way back from the state of Washington.

Moorhead Fire sped to the scene to start the process of cleaning the fuel from the area.

Minnesota State patrol arrived soon after the accident to perform a post-crash inspection before it heads back on the highway.

Sgt. Gerald Hanson, Minnesota State Patrol: "The physical part of the inspection is done and there are a few items caused by the crash that are going to put the truck out of service for the time being until they are repaired, one being the fuel tank and flat tires. Other than this paper work, everything checks out, they'll be good to go once the truck is fixed."

Now, the 16-wheeler involved in this accident, it does have something called duel fuels tanks. Meaning, it has a spare to get these truckers back to Ontario.

The trucking company involved in this accident is responsible for paying a contractor to wash away all of the diesel.
