Fargo, ND (WDAY TV)-- A 19-year-old Wahpeton man is in custody after police say he went on a vandalism spree.

The Wahpeton police department was flooded with 21 reports of car break-ins, slashed tires, and even two car fires.

It adds to an unusual rash of crimes for the city.

The charred and burned remains of this vehicle are evidence of a late-night crime spree in Wahpeton.

Many other car owners woke up to slashed tires and break-ins.

Police got 21 reports of car vandalism, including two that were set on fire.

A 19-year-old Wahpeton man is in custody, awaiting a laundry list of charges.

Jay Kruger- Wahpeton Resident: "It's been kind of different. I get the paper at home and we've been reading the articles. You sometimes wonder what possesses people to do things like this, some of the senseless crimes."

This latest spree adds to a recent rash of crimes, unusual for this quiet town.

In May, two armed men robbed a Tesoro north of town, pulling the cashier's hair and forcing her to open the register.

And just last week, a man attacked a female employee at a Family Dollar store with a pair of scissors.

Alfred Collins- Wahpeton Resident: "It's a different world now. You've got the dollar store, bank robberies... yeah, more crime."

But residents say they still love living here.

Kruger: "It's normally a pretty safe community, people say hi to each other."

And Alfred Collins is happy with the way local police have handled the uncharacteristic amount of crime.

Collins: "Just about all of them down here that I know of, they're right on top of it."

The 19-year-old suspect will face charges including unlawful entry and endangerment by fire.

Authorities are withholding his name until those charges are formally filed.
