ROBBINSDALE, Minn. (AP) — Hennepin County is seeing a dramatic rise in heroin deaths and emergency room admissions for overdoses.
The sheriff's office says the number of heroin overdose deaths in Minnesota's largest county jumped by 85 percent in 2012, compared with the previous year.
It was the second year in a row that heroin deaths spiked in the county. In 2011, the number of heroin overdose deaths in Hennepin County more than doubled from the previous year.
Sheriff Rich Stanek told a news conference Thursday it's "a very tough battle."
The Star Tribune reports 37 people died of heroin overdoses in Hennepin County in 2012. Stanek says already this year, the county is on track to have even more, although he did not offer a number of deaths so far this year.
