PIERRE, S.D. (AP) — The Stanley County Commission has arranged a land swap to preserve a pioneer cemetery in central South Dakota.

The unmarked Meers town site cemetery is in the middle of farmland owned by Fargo, N.D.-based RDO Equipment Co. The Capital Journal reports that Stanley County is swapping a similar amount of land it owns elsewhere.

The defunct village of Meers once was on the main freight route between Fort Pierre and Deadwood. Railroads and then highways eventually put the town out of business.

The South Dakota State Historical Society says the Meers cemetery likely contains about 50 graves.
