Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) – Cold, rainy, windy: Perfect weather for the start of Ribfest today.
The good tasting festival and bad weather seem to go hand-in-hand.
It wasn't a packed parking lot at the opening day of Ribfest. Shorts and sandals were replaced with raincoats and umbrellas.
Donna Rice, Desperado’s BBQ: "Look at these lines. We are doing good, honey."
But Donna Rice with Desperado's Barbecue out of Ohio says the cool weather didn't stop people from getting their hands on some prize-winning ribs.
Rice: "These folks are awesome up here. They have been waiting all year for these ribs and they don't mind a little bit of cold."
This isn't the first time event organizers have dealt with less-than-stellar weather. Last year was hot and sunny, but the beginning of June is typically a rainy season. In 2007, wind gusts near 40 miles an hour cancelled one night of Ribfest.
Fortunately, the rain and wind held off this time, giving rib-lovers a chance to enjoy their food.
John Pedersen, Fargo Resident: "I think that people around here are pretty hearty, so a little cold weather is not going to keep them away from barbecue."
Megan Leininger, Fargo Resident: "There were a ton more people here last year and I think that it's one of those things that only comes around once a year, so rain or shine people want to come and eat the food."
Ribfest continues tonight until 11 o'clock and opens again at 11 tomorrow morning.
