Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) - A man is lucky to be alive after his car was hit by a train late Tuesday night in Fargo.

Fargo police are investigating the accident that happened around 10:30 at the railroad crossing on 27th street north of Main Avenue.

Witnesses say the driver drove his car past road closure construction barriers before it got stuck on the tracks. He was able to escape and went to nearby Rick's bar to call for assistance, but it was too late. An eastbound train struck his vehicle, shocking people nearby who came outside to try to help.

Ken Hawkins, Witness: “It's kind of traumatic. A few years ago, I saw a real bad accident involving a train, a couple people got killed. I'm just glad that nobody got hurt and that's the primary thing. Property damage can always be replaced.”

Police are still investigating and are not releasing any more information at this time.
