Hamid Shirvani says he's been the target of racist attacks

Fargo, ND (WDAY TV)-- Embattled North Dakota University System Chancellor Hamid Shirvani is calling out his critics, saying he's been the target of racist attacks.

Fargo, ND (WDAY TV)-- Embattled North Dakota University System Chancellor Hamid Shirvani is calling out his critics, saying he's been the target of racist attacks.

This after the state's board of higher education voted to buyout the remainder of his contract on Monday, for hundreds of thousands of dollars..

There's been months of turmoil in our state's higher ed system surrounding Chancellor Ham Shirvani.

And today, he's claiming the allegations against him stem from something deeper. Something so strong he regrets not leaving the job earlier.

Hamid Shirvani- ND University System Chancellor: "I should've by the first of March, I should have said I'm out of here, and retrospectively that was my second biggest mistake, the first one was I should've never taken this job."

Shirvani tells us he's been the target of personal attacks for months.. Ranging from racist emails to someone even going the length of egging his home.

He says some people think he does not fit in with North Dakota's culture.

And although to board of higher ed voted to buyout the rest of his 3-year contract. Totaling more than 800 thousand dollars plus benefits.

The board president says their decision had nothing to do with race, but instead was based solely on Shirvani's performance and questions about his leadership abilities.
