Fargo, ND (WDAY TV)-- The NCAA track championships begin Wednesday at the Taj Mahal of the sport; Heyward Field and the University of Oregon and for the 1st time NDSU's men's team will be represented.
Just four years ago Casey Orgon had never thrown a hammer; but now he's one of the best in the nation.
Casey Orgon is the best hammer thrower in NDSU history, and he got there by just looking for something to do.
Casey Orgon- Hammer Thrower: "I was a 3-sport athlete for most of high school and living on campus; having everything right there and not having to leave campus. I found myself having a lot of free time and I decided it would be best to find something good to do with that free time."
Since walking on to the track team in 2009, his career has soared like the hammer that explodes from his calloused hands.
Last month he won his 3rd straight Summit League Title, something he never could have expected.
Orgon: "I mean certainly not freshman year"
Orgon continues to improve, he has been breaking his own school record on a weekly basis this spring, last weekend was his 6th time, when he threw the hammer 216 feet, 6 inches to qualify for his first national championship outdoor meet.
Now this one time walk-on from Bemidji high school that never made a state meet in high school is trying to throw himself into the NDSU record books one last time, and become the program's first male division one outdoor all-american.
Orgon is seeded 7th out of 24 in the hammer throw, the top 8 earn all-american status....Fargo South grad Laura Roesler is one of the favorites in the 800.
