Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) - In a short season the Shanley baseball team experienced a lot. Last year's runner-up finished the regular season with the 7th best record in the EDC. That same team is celebrating a state championship today.

For the first time in three recent tries, Shanley was able to get past West Fargo in a championship game.

The Deacons grabbed a 3-0 lead in the 4th and never looked back, riding the arms of Lincoln Voss and Jake Salentine to a 3-2 victory. In fact, Voss and Salentine were the only two players to pitch for the Deacons the entire state tournament, but they say it was worth it.

Jake Salentine, Shanley Jr. Pitcher/INF: “We got some timely hits. It was crazy how are team did this. It's a nice way to end the season. Awesome.”

Lincoln Voss, Shanley Sr. Pitcher/INF: “They always come back and find a way to stay in it, but we were able to shut the door.

Joel Swanson, Shanley Head Coach: “To think that two weeks ago we were 5-11 and we were trying to qualify for the state tournament to the point we're at now is just a tribute to them. We knew all along that they had it in them. We were just afraid to show it early in the season and we finally came forward.”

The Deacons will be a threat again next year. They only lose two seniors.
