Fargo, ND (WDAY TV)-- North Dakota veterans are in Grand Forks for the annual VFW convention.

Their main focus is to establish a new agenda for the upcoming year.

VFW post commanders from all over North Dakota met in the Hilton Garden Inn today to honor those fallen, celebrate achievements, and discuss the future of their organization.

John Hamilton- VFW National Commander in Chief: "It's to elect their officers for next year for the department of North Dakota and discuss issues that are important to us as veterans and military families and our families as well."

This convention is exciting for many veterans because the VFW National Commander in Chief John Hamilton was able to attend.

Hamilton: "This is my first convention in North Dakota, i'm from Florida, it seems to be a good turnout, people are motivated, they're excited and they're glad to be here."

Veterans meet here for comradeship...

Caleb Aberle- Veteran: "Since I suffer from PTSD, just talking to other veterans here at the convention has really helped me out."

But they also meet here for business. At these annual ceremonies a new state commander is elected and a new agenda is created based on certain areas of focus.

Hamilton: "Obviously it's quality of life for the military, their dependants, it's about veterans health care, it's about the back log within the VA system itself, the benefits and entitlements they've earned."

Along with healthcare and benefits, programs for veterans like Caleb Aberle who suffer from PTSD are areas that this new agenda will touch on.

Hamilton: "One percent of the nation keeps us all free, our active duty military, 99 percent of the nation should take care of that one percent."

The new agenda will be presented at the National V-F-W convention in July.
