North Dakota is kicking off the Special Olympics

Fargo, ND (WDAY TV)-- More than 500 athletes are in town this weekend, hoping to take home the gold in the North Dakota Special Olympics.

Fargo, ND (WDAY TV)-- More than 500 athletes are in town this weekend, hoping to take home the gold in the North Dakota Special Olympics.

They kicked off today's events with an opening ceremony.

The Law Enforcement Torch run finished its final leg, and they lit the Flame of Hope this morning.

During the two-day games, which started Friday, athletes compete in events including volleyball, track and field, swimming.

Karen Miller- Grand Forks: "Special Olympics is all about having a great time. Just go out and have fun and be with everybody."

Athletes are competing to represent North Dakota in the 2014 Special Olympics National Games in New Jersey.
