FARGO, N.D. (AP) — The North Dakota Board of Higher Education is slated to meet behind closed doors Monday in Medora to discuss the contract of embattled University System Chancellor Hamid Shirvani.

University System spokeswoman Linda Donlin says the executive session is part of the board's two-day annual retreat, which also will include two training sessions.

Donlin says the closed meeting will allow the board to review Shirvani's contract without the public, media or chancellor in the room.

Shirvani was hired as chancellor on July 1. He has come under repeated fire for what his critics describe as a heavy-handed leadership style.

Shirvani says he was given a mandate by the state Board of Higher Education to overhaul North Dakota's education system and fix its problems, including low graduation rates.
