Wahpeton, ND (WDAY TV) - One man is behind bars after police say he stabbed a store clerk in Wahpeton with a scissors.
Now, the suspect faces a number of charges from aggravated assault to kidnapping.
Police say the suspect walked into Family Dollar around 8 o'clock Wednesday night, where he locked seven people in the back of the store and stabbed the female clerk several times with a scissors.
Chief Scott Thorsteinson, Wahpeton Police: “I'd say for our entire state it's a rare thing and extremely rare in Wahpeton.”
The chief says police arrived at the Dakota Avenue store in less than a minute and were able to break up what they call the random attack. They also found other people trapped inside the store.
Thorsteinson: "He took control of the store and moved employees and customers, including a 5-year-old child, into a back room and then secured them there by placing items, heavy items, against the door."
When police tried to arrest the suspect, a fight broke out, injuring an officer. They tased the man and were able to take him into custody. But all three; the victim, the suspect, and the officer; had to be treated for injuries at the hospital.
Thorsteinson: "It could've been a lot worse. If our officers hadn't been there so quickly, the employee might have been more badly injured or killed. Anytime you start slashing people or stabbing people in that area of the body, you run a great risk of harming them terribly."
The victim suffered injuries to her neck but has been released from the hospital. The suspect faces charges of aggravated assault, kidnapping, and possibly armed robbery.
The suspect's name has not yet been released. Police say they will identify him after he is formally charged, which should come tomorrow.
